GMC Sierra 1500 generations, and why the schedule changes
K2XX generation (2014-2018)
4.3L EcoTec3 V6 (LV3/LV1), 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (L83, AFM), or 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 (L86, AFM) - 6L80/6L90 6-speed automatic, or 8L90 8-speed from MY2015 (6.2L) / MY2017 (select 5.3L)
Oil: dexos1 full synthetic - 0W-20 (5.3L/6.2L V8) or 5W-30 (4.3L V6). Interval: 7,500 miles typically, per the GM Oil Life Monitor.
- 5.3L/6.2L V8 oil capacity is 8.5 qt for MY2014 only, then 8.0 qt from MY2015 on
- Wheel nut torque is 140 lb-ft across the entire generation, matching every later T1 year too
- Transfer case fluid runs a normal-duty (97,500 mi) and severe-duty (45,000 mi, or 22,500 mi under extreme off-road/commercial use) split
T1 generation (2019-2021 powertrains) (2019-2021)
4.3L EcoTec3 V6 (LV3), 2.7L Turbo I4 (L3B), 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (L82/L84, DFM), 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 (L87, DFM, 4WD only), or - from MY2020 - the 3.0L Duramax I6 turbodiesel (LM2)
Oil: dexos1 full synthetic - 0W-20 (5.3L/6.2L V8) or 5W-30 (2.7L Turbo and 4.3L V6); dexosD for the 3.0L Duramax. Interval: 7,500 miles typically, per the GM Oil Life Monitor.
- The 2.7L Turbo takes 5W-30, not 0W-20 - a fact this manual template shares with the Sierra 2500/3500 HD gas V8, easy to misread as a typo
- 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel debuts for MY2020 - class-exclusive in the light-duty segment
- Transfer case fluid interval is GVW-split in MY2019-2020 (97,500 mi under 8,600 lb; 45,000 mi over); MY2021 drops the GVW split for normal duty (97,500 mi flat) but keeps a separate 45,000-mi severe-duty figure
T1 generation (2022-2026 refresh) (2022 onward)
2.7L TurboMax I4 (L3B, rebranded), 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (L84 only, DFM), 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 (L87, DFM), or the 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel (LM2 in MY2022, updated to LZ0 from MY2023) - the 4.3L V6 and base 5.3L L82 are dropped
Oil: dexos1 full synthetic - 0W-20 (5.3L/6.2L V8) or 5W-30 (2.7L TurboMax); dexosD for the 3.0L Duramax. Interval: 7,500 miles typically, per the GM Oil Life Monitor.
- MY2023 refresh extends the coolant interval from 5 to 6 years and the transfer case interval from 97,500 to 100,000 miles
- No 2022 or 2024 GMC-specific owner's manual could be independently fetched for this file - both years' facts are carried forward from the manuals immediately before and after, which state them identically
- AT4X off-road trim debuts for MY2023 with Multimatic DSSV dampers
What a GMC Sierra 1500 needs, and when
These are the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 intervals. Earlier model years differ by generation, so open your own year for the exact schedule.
- Every 7,500 mi (per GM Oil Life Monitor): Engine oil and filter change (dexos1 - per your specific gas engine's viscosity grade); Reset the Oil Life Monitor; Check tire inflation pressure
- Every 7,500 mi (per GM Oil Life Monitor, 3.0L Duramax diesel): Engine oil and filter change with dexosD - the 3.0L Duramax does not take dexos1; Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Every 7,500 mi: Rotate tires and perform Required Services; Visually inspect steering, suspension, and chassis components; Visually check for fluid leaks
- Every 22,500 mi (or 24 months): Replace passenger compartment (cabin) air filter
- Every 45,000 mi (severe duty: towing/trailering/off-road): Change automatic transmission fluid and filter
- Every 100,000 mi (normal duty): Change transfer case fluid, if equipped with 4WD; Replace hood and/or body lift support gas struts (or every 10 years)
