P0128 on a Dodge
P0128 means the engine coolant is taking too long to reach operating temperature - the computer expected warm coolant by now and did not see it. On Dodge, Ram and Jeep vehicles this code is so common that it has a default suspect: a thermostat stuck open, letting coolant circulate through the radiator before the engine is warm.
It feels harmless - the truck drives fine - but an engine that never fully warms runs rich, wastes fuel, wears faster, and will not pass an emissions check with the light on. The fix is usually one of the cheapest on this site.
- Thermostat stuck open or opening early: The classic Dodge P0128. The wax element weakens with age and the thermostat starts opening cold. Watch the temp gauge: if it climbs slower than it used to and settles below its old spot, this is very likely it.
- Low coolant level: Air in the system throws off both warm-up and the sensor reading it. Check the overflow tank cold before spending anything.
- Coolant temperature sensor drifting: Less common than the thermostat but cheap to test - compare the sensor reading on a scan tool against an infrared thermometer at the housing.
- Cooling fan running constantly: A fan clutch or relay stuck on can overcool the engine at speed - worth a look if the code appears mainly in winter or highway driving.
