P0016 on a Ford: Crankshaft-Camshaft Correlation

P0016 on a Ford

P0016 means the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors disagree about where the engine is in its rotation - bank 1, sensor A. On Fords with variable cam timing, which is essentially all of them from the EcoBoost and Coyote era, the usual story is the variable cam timing hardware: a VCT solenoid that is stuck or screened over with debris, or cam phasers that no longer hold their commanded position.

Before any parts: this system runs on oil pressure. Low, worn-out or wrong-viscosity oil is the cheapest cause of VCT trouble and the first thing to rule out - especially if the code appeared long after the last oil change.
