Toyota RAV4 generations, and why the schedule changes
4th generation XA40 (2013-2018)
2.5L 2AR-FE four-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: 10,000 miles under normal use, 5,000 under severe.
- Transmission fluid drain-and-fill around 60,000 miles despite the lifetime label
- Rear differential fluid on all-wheel-drive models at 30,000 miles under severe use
- Spark plugs at 120,000 miles
5th generation XA50 (2019-2025)
2.5L A25A-FKS four, plus hybrid and Prime plug-in hybrid variants
Oil: 0W-16 full synthetic across the range. Interval: 10,000 miles.
- The oil specification moved to 0W-16 - using 0W-20 is a genuine error on this generation
- Direct injection makes intake valve carbon worth inspecting past 80,000 miles
- Hybrid and Prime models add an inverter coolant circuit separate from engine coolant
6th generation (2026 onward)
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid only, with no conventional gas variant
Oil: 0W-16 full synthetic. Interval: 10,000 miles.
- The entire range is electrified, so inverter coolant and battery cooling apply universally
- Regenerative braking means friction brakes work less but still need fluid on time
- Plug-in models add charging hardware to the inspection list
What a Toyota RAV4 needs, and when
These are the 2026 Toyota RAV4 intervals. Earlier model years differ by generation, so open your own year for the exact schedule.
- Every 5,000 mi / 6 months (severe duty or first year): Engine oil & filter change (0W-16); Tire rotation; Multi-point inspection; Inspect brake pads and rotors; Check fluid levels
- Every 10,000 mi / 12 months: Engine oil & filter change (0W-16); Tire rotation; Inspect engine air filter; Inspect cabin air filter; Inspect brakes, suspension, and steering
- Every 15,000 mi: Replace cabin air filter; Inspect brake system; Inspect exhaust system
- Every 30,000 mi: Replace engine air filter; Inspect spark plugs (gap check); Inspect drive belts; Inspect brake fluid condition; Inspect cooling system hoses
- Every 36 months (brake fluid): Replace brake fluid (DOT 3)
- Every 60,000 mi: Transmission fluid service - 8AT WS ATF or e-CVT fluid (recommended even if "sealed"); Inspect and clean throttle body; Inspect propeller shaft and driveline (AWD); Inspect rear differential fluid (if applicable)
