RAM 1500 generations, and why the schedule changes
4th generation DS (2009-2018)
3.6L Pentastar V6, 5.7L HEMI V8, or the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6
Oil: 5W-20 full synthetic on the gas engines, 5W-40 on the EcoDiesel. Interval: 8,000 - 10,000 miles on gas, shorter on the diesel.
- The optional air suspension needs its compressor and height sensors inspected
- Spark plugs at 100,000 miles, and the HEMI uses sixteen of them
- Differential and transfer case fluid at 60,000 miles for trucks that tow
5th generation DT (2019 onward)
3.6L Pentastar with eTorque mild hybrid, 5.7L HEMI with eTorque, or the 3.0L EcoDiesel
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic on gas engines. Interval: 10,000 miles on the oil life monitor.
- The eTorque mild hybrid system adds a 48-volt battery worth inspecting at service
- The 8-speed automatic wants fluid around 60,000 miles under towing use
- Air suspension remains an option and remains a wear item to inspect
What a RAM 1500 needs, and when
These are the 2026 RAM 1500 intervals. Earlier model years differ by generation, so open your own year for the exact schedule.
- Every 5,000 mi (severe duty / towing): Engine oil & filter change; Rotate tires; Inspect brakes and driveline; Inspect for fluid leaks
- Every 10,000 mi / 12 months: Engine oil & filter change (5W-20 HEMI/Pentastar; 5W-40 EcoDiesel); Rotate tires; Inspect brake pads, rotors, and suspension; Inspect steering and driveshafts
- Every 20,000 mi: Replace cabin air filter; Inspect brake linings; Replace fuel filters (3.0L EcoDiesel)
- Every 30,000 mi: Replace engine air filter; Inspect drive belt and hoses; Inspect coolant condition
- Every 36 months (brake fluid): Replace brake fluid (DOT 3)
- Every 60,000 mi: Front and rear axle fluid change (sooner for heavy towing); Transfer case fluid change (4WD); Automatic transmission fluid service (severe duty)
