Honda CR-V generations, and why the schedule changes
4th generation (2012-2016)
2.4L K24 four-cylinder with a 5-speed automatic, later a CVT
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: 7,500 - 10,000 miles on the Maintenance Minder.
- Rear differential fluid on all-wheel-drive models (Honda dual-pump fluid) - Maintenance Minder sub-code 6 decides; Honda publishes no fixed mileage
- Spark plugs (sub-code 4) - Honda publishes no fixed replacement mileage; Maintenance Minder decides
- Brake fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage
5th generation (2017-2022)
1.5L L15 turbo or 2.4L naturally aspirated, plus a hybrid from 2020
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: 7,500 - 10,000 miles on the Maintenance Minder.
- CVT requires Honda HCF-2 fluid specifically - Maintenance Minder sub-code 3 decides; Honda's own severe-duty figure (mountainous/low-speed driving or towing) is 25,000 mi
- Hybrid models from 2020 use a two-motor system with its own service considerations
- Rear differential fluid on all-wheel drive - Maintenance Minder sub-code 6 decides; Honda publishes no fixed mileage
6th generation (2023 onward)
1.5L turbo or the 2.0L Atkinson-cycle two-motor hybrid
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: up to 10,000 miles on the Maintenance Minder.
- Hybrid variants make up a growing share of the range and use no conventional transmission
- HCF-2 CVT fluid still applies on the turbo models - Maintenance Minder sub-code 3 decides; Honda's own severe-duty figure is 25,000 mi
- Rear differential fluid remains a Maintenance Minder sub-code 6 item on all-wheel drive; Honda publishes no fixed mileage
What a Honda CR-V needs, and when
These are the 2026 Honda CR-V intervals. Earlier model years differ by generation, so open your own year for the exact schedule.
- Maintenance Minder Code A (typically every 7,500-10,000 mi): Engine oil change (0W-20 full synthetic); Reset the oil life monitor
- Maintenance Minder Code B (typically every 15,000-20,000 mi): Replace engine oil and filter; Inspect brakes and brake fluid; Inspect suspension, steering, driveshaft boots, exhaust, and fuel lines
- Sub-code 1: Rotate tires
- Sub-code 2 (Maintenance Minder - no fixed mileage published): Replace engine air filter; Replace dust and pollen (cabin) filter; Inspect drive belt
- Sub-code 2, severe duty (dusty conditions for the air filter; high-soot urban conditions for the cabin filter): Replace engine air filter or cabin filter every 15,000 mi - Honda's own severe-duty override
- Sub-code 3 (Maintenance Minder - no fixed mileage under normal driving): Replace transmission fluid (CVT HCF-2 on the 1.5T; Honda HEVF-Type 1 on the hybrid e-CVT - both are a full replacement, not just an inspection)
