Ford Expedition 2018-2024 maintenance schedule

Each model year's source document is named under "by model year" below. A row or service that only some years have names those years.

IntervalService
At every oil change interval (as signalled by the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor - ceiling one year or 10,000 mi)
  • Change the engine oil and filter, then reset the oil change reminder
  • Rotate the tires, inspect tire wear and measure tread depth
  • Perform a multi-point inspection
  • Inspect the automatic transmission fluid level (vehicles with a dipstick)
  • Inspect the brake pads, rotors, hoses and parking brake
  • Inspect the engine cooling system strength and hoses
  • Inspect the exhaust system and heat shields
  • Inspect the front axle and U-joints
  • Inspect the half-shaft boots
  • Inspect the steering linkage, ball joints, suspension, tie-rod ends, driveshaft and U-joints
  • Inspect the wheels and related components for abnormal noise, wear or looseness
Every six months (owner checks)
  • Check the battery connections and clean if necessary
  • Check the body and door drain holes for obstructions
  • Check the cooling system fluid level and coolant strength
  • Check the door weatherstrips for wear and lubricate if necessary
  • Check the hinges, latches and outside locks for operation and lubricate if necessary
  • Check the parking brake, seatbelts and seat latches
  • Check the washer spray and wiper operation
Every 20,000 mi (32,000 km)
  • Replace the cabin air filter
Every 30,000 mi (48,000 km)
  • Replace the engine air filter
Every three years
  • Change the brake fluid - Motorcraft DOT 4 LV (WSS-M6C65-A2). This one is time-based, not mileage-based.
Every 100,000 mi (160,000 km)
  • Replace the spark plugs
  • Inspect the accessory drive belt(s)
Every 150,000 mi (240,000 km)
  • Change the automatic transmission fluid - MERCON ULV (not the MERCON LV the transfer case takes)
  • Change the front axle fluid (four-wheel drive)
  • Change the rear axle fluid
  • Change the transfer case fluid (four-wheel drive) - MERCON LV
  • Replace the accessory drive belt(s)
Every 200,000 mi (320,000 km) or 10 years, then every 100,000 mi (160,000 km) or 5 years
  • Change the engine coolant - Motorcraft Yellow prediluted (WSS-M97B57-A2)

  • Change the transfer case fluid every 60,000 mi (four-wheel drive)
  • Replace the spark plugs every 60,000 mi
  • Change the engine oil and filter as indicated by the information display
Off-road operation
  • Inspect the steering linkage, ball joints and U-joints, and lubricate them if they are equipped with grease fittings - inspect frequently, service as required
  • Replace the engine air filter as required
  • Replace the cabin air filter as required
  • Change the transfer case fluid every 60,000 mi (four-wheel drive)
Operating on unpaved, dusty or sandy roads
  • Change the engine oil and filter every 5,000 mi (8,000 km) - a flat interval, not the oil-life monitor
  • Rotate the tires and inspect tread depth every 5,000 mi (8,000 km)
  • Inspect the wheels and related components every 5,000 mi (8,000 km)
  • Replace the engine and cabin air filters as required - inspect frequently
  • Change the transfer case fluid every 60,000 mi (four-wheel drive)
Extensive idling or low-speed driving for long distances (heavy commercial use)
  • Replace the engine air filter and cabin air filter as required - inspect frequently
  • Change the transfer case fluid every 60,000 mi (four-wheel drive)
  • Replace the spark plugs every 60,000 mi
Severe duty (any of the conditions above) - transmission (2024 only)

When to replace each part - Ford Expedition 2018-2024

The schedule above is organized by mileage. This is the same information organized by part, for when you already know what you are replacing and just need the interval.

Engine oil & filterSet by the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, not by a fixed mileage. Ford states a ceiling of one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km), and to change within two weeks or 500 mi (800 km) of the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message. If the monitor resets prematurely or stops working, Ford's own fallback is six months or 5,000 mi (8,000 km). Severe-duty use (dusty or sandy roads) drops it to a flat 5,000 mi (8,000 km).
Transmission fluid
  • 2018-2023: Every 150,000 mi (240,000 km): change the automatic transmission fluid. Ford lists no separate severe-duty transmission interval - towing, extensive idling, dusty roads and off-road use bring the transfer case fluid and spark plugs forward to 60,000 mi, not the transmission fluid
  • 2024: Every 150,000 mi (240,000 km) normal duty; every 30,000 mi (48,000 km) under the severe-duty conditions Ford lists (towing, extensive idling, dusty or off-road operation)
CoolantInitial change at 10 years or 200,000 mi (320,000 km), then every 5 years or 100,000 mi (160,000 km) - per the 2019 and 2022 manuals
Spark plugsEvery 100,000 mi (160,000 km) normal duty; every 60,000 mi (96,000 km) when towing regularly or under extensive idling / heavy commercial use
Engine air filterEvery 30,000 mi (48,000 km). Under dusty or sandy operation, or heavy commercial idling, Ford drops this to "inspect frequently, service as required" with no fixed interval.
Cabin air filterEvery 20,000 mi (32,000 km), and "inspect frequently, service as required" under dusty, sandy or heavy-idling use
BrakesInspect pads, rotors, hoses and the parking brake at every oil change interval
TiresRotate, inspect for wear and measure tread depth at every oil change interval; every 5,000 mi (8,000 km) under dusty or sandy operation
BatteryCheck the connections every six months and clean if necessary
