What P0135 actually means

P0135 is a heater circuit fault on the upstream oxygen sensor - bank 1, sensor 1, the one ahead of the catalytic converter that the PCM uses for live fuel trim. The heating element that brings this sensor to its roughly 600F operating temperature is not drawing the expected current. Until the sensor is hot, the PCM cannot enter closed loop, so it runs a fixed default fuel map instead of adjusting to actual conditions.
