The 5 transmission warning signs
The average transmission repair costs $1,500-$3,500 and a full replacement $3,000-$7,000. These signs give you the window to act before a small issue becomes a catastrophic failure.
- Slipping gears or unexpected RPM surges - the car revs high but does not accelerate proportionally. Check fluid level and color first: dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell means it has overheated.
- Delayed engagement - a 2-3 second delay moving off after shifting from Park to Drive. Common causes: low fluid, worn solenoids, or a failing torque converter.
- Grinding, clunking or whining noises - grinding during shifts, clunking into Drive or Reverse (often a worn mount or CV joint), whining that changes with speed.
- A red or brown fluid leak under the center of the car - common sources are the pan gasket, shaft seals and cooler line fittings.
- Check engine light with transmission codes such as P0700, P0730 or P0740 - do not clear them and drive on; get a diagnosis.
Rebuild vs. replace
A rebuild runs about $1,500-$3,500 and suits a transmission with one or two worn parts. A remanufactured unit, about $2,500-$4,500, carries a better long-term warranty. A used transmission, about $800-$1,500 plus labor, is risky unless the seller gives a warranty. Fluid change intervals depend on the transmission and how the car is driven, so use the one in your owner's manual.
