3rd generation XW30 (2010-2015)
1.8L 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle four paired with the Hybrid Synergy Drive eCVT
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: 10,000 miles.
- The eCVT transaxle takes a drain-and-fill around 60,000 miles despite the lifetime label
- Inverter coolant is a separate circuit from engine coolant and both need attention
- The hybrid battery cooling fan intake clogs with dust and pet hair and needs cleaning
4th generation XW50 (2016-2022)
1.8L 2ZR-FXE with an improved hybrid transaxle, plus an available all-wheel-drive variant
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: 10,000 miles.
- Brake fluid every 3 years - the regenerative braking system means friction brakes work less but fluid still ages
- Iridium spark plugs at 120,000 miles
- Engine coolant at 100,000 miles, inverter coolant on its own schedule
5th generation XW60 (2023 onward)
2.0L M20A-FXS hybrid, with a plug-in Prime variant
Oil: 0W-16 full synthetic. Interval: 10,000 miles.
- The oil specification changed to 0W-16 - using 0W-20 is a real error on this generation
- Substantially more power means the friction brakes see more use than earlier Prius generations
- Plug-in Prime models add charging hardware and a larger battery cooling circuit
What a Toyota Prius needs, and when
These are the 2026 Toyota Prius intervals. Earlier model years differ by generation, so open your own year for the exact schedule.
- Every 5,000 mi (severe duty): Engine oil & filter change (0W-16 full synthetic (2.0L M20A-FXS)); Rotate tires; Inspect fluid levels; Multi-point inspection
- Every 10,000 mi / 12 months: Engine oil & filter change (0W-16 full synthetic (2.0L M20A-FXS)); Rotate tires; Inspect brakes, hoses, and suspension; Inspect hybrid system and 12V battery
- Every 15,000 mi: Replace cabin air filter; Inspect brake pads and rotors; Inspect drive belt
- Every 30,000 mi / 36 months: Replace engine air filter; Replace brake fluid (DOT 3); Inspect ball joints and steering linkage; Inspect inverter coolant level
- Every 60,000 mi: eCVT transaxle fluid drain & fill (Toyota ATF WS); Inspect hybrid transaxle; Inspect PCV valve
- Every 100,000 mi: Engine coolant flush (Toyota Super Long Life pink); Inverter coolant flush; Inspect water pump
