Subaru Outback generations, and why the schedule changes
5th generation (2015-2019)
2.5L FB25 flat-four or 3.6L EZ36 flat-six, both with the Lineartronic CVT
Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic. Interval: 6,000 miles or 6 months - notably shorter than most rivals.
- CVT fluid drain-and-fill is worth doing despite the lifetime label, particularly if you tow
- Rear differential fluid and iridium spark plugs at 60,000 miles
- Brake fluid every 30,000 miles, which is more frequent than most makes specify
6th generation (2020 onward)
2.5L FB25 or the 2.4L FA24 turbo flat-four, both on the Subaru Global Platform
Oil: 0W-20 on the 2.5L, 5W-30 on the 2.4L turbo. Interval: 6,000 miles or 6 months.
- The 2.4L turbo takes a different oil viscosity from the 2.5L - do not assume they match
- EyeSight camera calibration may be needed after windscreen replacement
- Coolant flush at 137,500 miles, unusually long by industry standards
